On our next day in Seoul, we did the typical tourist thing and visited the big palace of Gyeongbokgung. Seoul has 5 palaces overall, and Gyeonbokgung is the largest. If you come in hanbok, you can get in free. Renting a hanbok is relatively inexpensive and so much fun. Even without an hanbok, entry is very inexpensive. We enjoyed the scenery, took pictures, and then explored the newly revamped square outside of the palace. We love the wrap around 3-D digital billboards and seeing the modern side of Seoul just outside the historic palace. In this square are 2 statues-- King Sejong who created the Korean character system hangul and Yi Sun-Shin who led the Korean navy to victory over the Japanese. If you go under these statues, there is a fabulous museum that is completely free and fun for all. Around the square, there are many coffee shops, an art museum, water play for the kids, an outdoor library with chairs, and often events. While we were there, there was an outdoor opera being performed.
