Here are our Top 10 Do’s and Don’ts for surviving—and thriving—in your foreign-language journey.
1. DO: Make Mistakes!
DON’T: Be terrified of them.If you wait until your language is perfect before speaking, you may be waiting forever. Mistakes are proof that your brain is actually doing something. Embrace the awkwardness!
2. DO: Practice Speaking
DON’T: Only talk to your textbook.Your textbook is very knowledgeable, but it probably won't correct your pronunciation, laugh at your jokes, or tell you that you just accidentally said, “I am a potato.”
3. DO: Learn Useful Vocabulary
DON’T: Memorize 47 words for obscure types of medieval farming equipment.Start with words you will actually use. Food, family, school, hobbies, travel, greetings, and the all-important “Where is the bathroom?” are excellent places to begin.
4. DO: Listen to Native Speakers
DON’T: Assume your language app sounds exactly like real life.Real people talk quickly. They mumble. They use slang. They have accents. They sometimes swallow half the sentence. Welcome to authentic language!
5. DO: Practice a Little Every Day
DON’T: Study for six hours once every three weeks and call it a routine.Ten or fifteen minutes every day can be much more useful than a giant study marathon followed by three weeks of absolutely nothing.

DON’T: Assume Google Translate has explained everything.Language and culture are connected. A phrase that sounds perfectly reasonable in English might be hilarious, strange, or even rude in another culture. Learn the why, not just the what.
7. DO: Repeat Things Out Loud
DON’T: Whisper vocabulary into your brain and hope for the best.Your mouth needs practice too! Say the words. Read sentences aloud. Have conversations. Your future self will thank you when you don't have to mentally rehearse every sentence before ordering a sandwich.
8. DO: Be Patient
DON’T: Expect to be fluent by Friday.Language learning takes time. Some days you'll feel like a linguistic genius. Other days you'll forget the word for “chair.” This is normal.
9. DO: Have Fun!
DON’T: Turn every study session into a grammar emergency.Watch movies. Listen to music. Play games. Read comics. Cook a recipe. Talk with a native speaker. Find ways to make the language part of your life—not just another assignment.
10. DO: Keep Going!
DON’T: Give Up Because You Had a Bad Language Day.Progress isn't always obvious. One day you suddenly understand a sentence you couldn't understand six months ago, and you realize, “Wait… I actually understand this!”That moment makes all the vocabulary lists, pronunciation struggles, and confusing grammar rules worth it.
