Top 10 Reasons Self-Paced Classes Are Awesome

Why self paced classes are a good choice!
Why self paced classes are a good choice!

Let's be honest: students are not robots. They don't all wake up at exactly 6:00 a.m., become instantly motivated at 8:00 a.m., and magically understand algebra because the clock says it's time for algebra. Some students learn quickly. Some need a little more time. Some are morning people. Some believe that "morning" should begin around noon. That's one reason self-paced classes can be such a great option. Self-paced learning gives students more control over their schedules, their learning speed, and their educational experience. And, perhaps most importantly, it recognizes a simple truth:

There is more than one way to learn.

Here are the top 10 reasons self-paced classes might just be your student's new best friend.

1. Learn on Your Schedule

Have you ever looked at a family calendar and wondered, "When exactly are we supposed to fit school into this?" Between sports, music lessons, appointments, extracurricular activities, family commitments, and the occasional attempt to eat dinner together, schedules can get complicated quickly. Self-paced classes give students flexibility. Maybe your student is incredibly productive at 8 a.m. Maybe they're a completely different human being at 8 p.m. Maybe their best academic work happens somewhere in between. With self-paced learning, students can choose when they are ready to focus. No sprinting across town to make a 3:00 class. No rearranging the entire family calendar. No yelling, "WE HAVE CLASS IN FIVE MINUTES!" while someone is still looking for their shoes. Just learning on a schedule that works.

2. Go at Your Own Speed

Imagine putting 25 students in a room and telling them they all have to learn something at exactly the same speed. Sounds easy, right? Well... not exactly. One student might be thinking, "Can we move on?" Another might be thinking, "Wait. What does that mean?" And another might be quietly wondering whether anyone will notice if they pretend to understand. Self-paced learning eliminates much of that problem. Students can move quickly through material they understand and slow down when they encounter something challenging. Because sometimes the brain needs five minutes. And sometimes the brain needs fifty minutes. And occasionally the brain needs a snack.

3. Pause, Review, and Replay

We've all had that moment when someone explains something and we nod thoughtfully while thinking: "I have absolutely no idea what you just said." In a traditional class, the lesson may continue whether you're ready or not. With self-paced learning, students can pause and review. Didn't understand the first explanation? Try again. Need to review yesterday's material? Go back. Want to watch or read something one more time? Absolutely. There is no academic shame in pressing the metaphorical "Wait, go back!" button. Sometimes the second explanation is the one that makes everything click.

4. Learn Almost Anywhere

The classroom doesn't always have to be four walls, fluorescent lights, and a desk that is approximately the same size as a postage stamp. With self-paced learning, students can often work wherever they have a suitable learning environment and internet access. At home? Great. At the library? Perfect. While traveling? Absolutely. At the kitchen table while someone is making pancakes? Possibly—although we cannot guarantee the pancakes will survive the experience. The point is that learning can be much more flexible.

5. Less "Hurry Up!" Stress

School already comes with enough pressure. There are assignments, tests, projects, activities, and approximately 47 passwords students are expected to remember. Adding unnecessary pressure to the learning process doesn't always help. Self-paced classes allow students to spend more time on challenging concepts without feeling like the entire class is already three chapters ahead. The goal becomes: "Do I understand this?" instead of: "Can I finish this before everyone else?" That's a pretty important difference. At BE Education, you have full access to your self paced classes for a full year after purchase, giving you plenty of time to move at your own pace without getting cut off.

6. Learn Independence Without Being Abandoned

Self-paced learning helps students develop independence—but independence does not mean throwing a student into the wilderness with a textbook and saying, "Good luck!" Instead, students learn how to manage their time, organize their work, set goals, and take responsibility for their progress. Those skills matter far beyond one particular class. College professors aren't usually going to send someone to your dorm room and say, "Hey! Remember to study for your exam!" Employers generally don't provide a daily announcement saying, "It's time to organize your priorities!" Learning how to manage your own education is excellent practice for managing your future.

And yet, you aren't giving up help when you need it. Our BE Education instructors are here when you need us for any question and to give feedback on all assignments.

7. Fit School Around Life

Some students have busy lives. Maybe they're an athlete. Maybe they're involved in theater. Maybe they play an instrument. Maybe they have a part-time job. Maybe their family travels. Maybe they have approximately 800 extracurricular activities. Self-paced learning can help students fit academics into those schedules. Instead of saying, "Everything else has to move because school starts at exactly 4:00," students can sometimes say, "When can I realistically get my coursework done?" That shift can make a huge difference for busy families.

8. Spend More Time on What Actually Matters

Imagine spending 30 minutes studying something you already understand. Then imagine spending those same 30 minutes working on the one concept that has been making you stare at your textbook like it's written in ancient Egyptian. Which is probably a better use of your time? Self-paced learning allows students to devote more attention to areas where they need it. Already understand the material? Keep moving! Need more practice? Take your time! Confused? Stop. Review. Try again. This can make learning more efficient and much more personalized.

9. Build Time-Management Skills

Here's a little secret: Being able to manage your own time is basically a superpower. Self-paced classes give students an opportunity to practice that skill. They have to think about questions like:

  • When am I going to study?

  • How much can I realistically accomplish today?

  • What should I prioritize?

  • Am I falling behind?

  • Do I need to spend more time on this topic?

These may sound like simple questions, but learning to answer them effectively can make a huge difference in high school, college, and eventually the workplace. And yes, it may occasionally involve discovering that watching three hours of videos about cats was not included in the original study plan. That's part of the learning process too.

10. You're in the Driver's Seat

Perhaps the best thing about self-paced learning is that students get to take ownership of their education. They're not simply passengers being driven from one assignment to the next. They're learning how to navigate. They can make decisions about their schedule, their pace, their study habits, and their goals. That doesn't mean there aren't expectations. It means students have more responsibility—and more control. And when students take ownership of their education, they can begin to see learning as something they do, rather than something that is simply done to them. And we all know that is a HUGE part of homeschoolers--moving our students into independently owning their own learning.

So... Are Self-Paced Classes Right for You?

Self-paced learning isn't necessarily the perfect fit for every student. Some students absolutely love a live classroom. They thrive on real-time discussions, scheduled meetings, and having someone tell them exactly what needs to be done and when. The good news it, we have live online group classes for those learners too!

Other students hear the words "flexible schedule" and immediately think: "Finally. Someone understands me." For those students, self-paced classes can be an excellent option. They offer flexibility without giving up academic goals, independence without isolation, and structure without forcing every student into exactly the same schedule. Because students aren't all the same. They don't all learn at the same speed. They don't all have the same schedules. And they definitely don't all have their best ideas at the same time of day.

Your Schedule. Your Pace. Your Education.

That is our mission at BE Education.

That's the beauty of self-paced learning.

And yes, you can still have a snack while you study.

We won't tell.
